SOUTH EAST ENGLAND JEWS The database is presented in Excel format and consists of two sheets. Sheet 1 (Marked SEJ) consists of vital records abstracted from the "Record of Births, Marriages and Deaths in Dover, Deal, Canterbury and Ramsgate 1831 -1870 "1, taken from photocopies kindly provided by Martyn Webster3 Included in this database are Births August 1830 - January 1850; Marriages June 1831 - June 1854: Deaths February 1831 - September 1851. Each record has been assigned a discrete reference: SEJB* = Births; SEJM* = Marriages; SEJD* = Deaths. There are no transcripts of the Hebrew portion of these records Sheet 2 (Marked DeL Cant) Consists of data abstracted from a survey of the Canterbury Jewish Cemetery by Dr. Nicholas de Lange and Dr. Julia Neuberger in 19752. These records, numbered DEL*, appear in the order of the typed transcript, not date order. The separate diagram of the "Jews Burial Ground, Canterbury Kent" was reproduced from the original in "Record of Births, Marriages and Deaths in Dover, Deal, Canterbury and Ramsgate 1831 -1870 "1 Sources & Acknowledgements: 1The original records are lodged at the Parkes Library, Southampton University. For further information, contact Dr C. M. Woolgar, Head of Special Collections, who advises that where bound volumes are concerned, any copies they may supply would be on microfilm, as this is the reprographic process that would be least deleterious to the originals. My thanks to him for his continuing courteous and positive response to research enquiries. 2My grateful thanks to Dr. Nicholas de Lange for permitting me to use his survey. Along with Dr. Neuberger, his pioneering work in surveying and recording Jewish Cemeteries deserves the gratitude both Genealogists and the wider Anglo Jewish community. 3My sincere thanks to Martyn C. Webster, who, several years ago, provided the photocopies of the records as well as the plan of the Canterbury Cemetery. It was his most instructive piece in the JGSGB magazine Shemot Dec 2001 that first alerted me to the existence of these records: his article is a "must" for anyone with an interest in this part of the UK.
