New Synagogue Marriages & Ketubah Please take a few minutes to read this document before accessing the data. Up to recently, these records were available on CD. Since this is no longer practicable, we have decided to publish them online. The databases contain the following records New Synagogue Ketubah 1819-1832, New Synagogue Marriages 1791-1823 and New Synagogue Marriages August 1837-August 1842. Abstracted from the late Dr. Susser's transcripts of The New Synagogue Duplicate Ketubah Book, these transcripts form part of the Susser Archive, which now appears on the JCR-UK website http://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/susser/susserpublications.htm Unfortunately, the New Synagogue Ketubot material cannot currently be viewed and so it has been necessary, at least for the time being, to remove notes referring researchers to Dr. Susser's original transcripts. File Formats: The material is presented in two formats: Excel 2000 Datasheets (.xls) & Text (.pdf) Reference Numbers: Each event has been assigned a unique reference number. NSM ## = Marriages; NSM numbers start at 001 and run consecutively. NSK ## = Ketubah; NSK references follow the numbers assigned by Dr. Susser and start at #20. The Transliterations: The Birth and Marriage records were prepared by a dedicated amateur from across the Atlantic and carry the usual caveats: the transcriptions of the Duplicate Ketubah Book are the work of the late Dr. Bernard Susser and may, therefore, be taken as authoritative. The "additional information" column which appeared on the original CD has not been reproduced. Phonetic rendition of Hebrew names: There are several ways of rendering common Hebrew names in 'English': Zeeb\Zeev\Ze'ev; Chaim\Hayim; Eliakim\Elijakim\Eliyakum; Pais\Feiss. In order to achieve a modicum of homogenisation, Dr. Susser's lead has been followed, where practical and amended the Marriages have been amended to match. Where the choice was not entirely clear [Ari\Uri\Aryeh?] the transliterator's rendition has been retained: researchers will therefore need to be imaginative in their use of ** when looking for matching Patronymics! Acknowledgements: Acknowledgements of the highest order are due to the Mormon Church for their unparalleled endeavours in the work of preserving and making available to genealogists world-wide, the wealth of recorded data that might otherwise have been lost for all time. Warmest thanks also to Frank Gent, the original publisher of these transcripts for his unfailing enthusiasm and support and to CEN & JHS for their advice and assistance at the final stages of editing. Lastly, and most essentially, on behalf of Jewish Genealogists across the globe, we offer our profound appreciation to the American originator of the Marriage transcripts; although she is no longer with us and her identity is known by some, her frequent and forcibly expressed desire to remain strictly anonymous must, regrettably, be honoured. Notes on New Synagogue Marriages August 1837-August 1842: 196 Marriages registered at the New Synagogue between August 1837 (commencement of Civil Registration) and August 1842. The transcripts were taken from the LDS film of the Synagogue's civil certificates and show the signatures as written by the parties to the marriage. Unless otherwise stated, bride and groom are of full age and not previously married. Standard (i.e. Synagogue Functionary) witnesses appear to be "Moses Levy" and "David Leo" and they have not been entered into this database. Other witnesses appearing here may be personal to one of the parties to the marriage. Unless otherwise noted, bridal partners are literate. There are three sheets: 1) Fully detailed chronological list of marriages; 2) Alphabetical list of Grooms; 3) Alphabetical list of Brides. Because of the number of columns, it is absolutely NOT possible to offer this database in any other format. Important Note: These transcripts are intended for the use of individual Genealogists and Family Historians. Complete or partial files should not be copied to any Genealogical Archive, placed on websites or bulletin boards, or otherwise reproduced in any printed or electronic media. Angela L.
