THE LONDON JEWS IN THE LAST DECADE OF THE 17TH CENTURY DATABASE

Compiled from names appearing in two online databases with additional material from Arthur Arnold's Abstracts published in the Transactions of The Jewish Historical Society.

Since Biblical forenames were common during this time and, since there was a surprising number of persons with 'foreign-sounding' family names,  it has not always been easy to distinguish Jews from other citizens. Apart from those instances where the word "Jew" is specified,  or where the families are documented in other Jewish sources, the choice of whom to include has been personal and arbitrary and embraces the following criteria:

·          If the name also appears in Arnold (see below), even if is not one I would have picked.

·          If it looks "possible" and the address  is St. James, Dukes Place or St. Catherine Cree.

There will be omissions and incorrect inclusions:  you have only to look at  FSP 139 to appreciate the problem!

The database consists of five sheets. Each entry has been allocated a unique reference:

COL*.      Names taken  from Source 1

COLS*     Names taken from Source 1 Supplements 1 & 2

COLAA*  Names which appear in Source 3 but not in Source 1,

including a  section entitled "CITY WITHOUT THE WALLS"

FSP*                        Names taken from Source 2

INDEX      An index of names only + reference from all the sheets

"An index to the names of individuals enumerated in the City (within the Walls) in connection with the 1694 Act (6 & 7 Wm. & M., c. 6)...........

The official purpose of the 1694 Act was to provide revenue, for carrying on the war against France, by levying taxes upon burials, births and marriages and annual dues upon bachelors  over 25 years of age and upon childless widowers. The Act came into force as from 1 May 1695, initially for a five- year period, but was later extended until 1 August 1706 (by 8 & 9 Wm. III, c. 20)."
