Hoxton Burials

This excel database has been abstracted from a manuscript held by the University of Southampton who have given permission for publication on B-J. This database is the work of Angela Shire.

Please read the following notes BEFORE you download the file:

Title Page: University of Southampton Library, Archives & Manuscripts, Ref: MS 187 AJ 352/1/6  pp. 1- 29 Hambro Synagogue.  Hoxton Street Cemetery (adjoining Hoxton House) purchased by Marcus Moses (Mordecai Hamburger) on 25th March 1707. Translation of the Epitaphs still visible, made in December 1929 by Dyan Mendelssohn of the United Synagogue.

Notes from Angela Shire: The reference numbers are those given by Rev. Mendelssohn and, since in some cases, they are repeated, I have retained his numbers but designated them HOX1 and HOX2.  Many of the actual entries also appear to be duplicated. There are some apparent inconsistencies in the transcriptions, for example: Hebrew date of death for Joseph Gompertz is given finally as 9 June AM 567 but, in an earlier part of the transcription, the correct date of  AM 570  (1816) is noted and this is the one I have used. Comments in “quotes” are lifted from Rev. Mendelssohn’s manuscript.  Additional comments by Angela Shire: Copyright restrictions forbid reproduction of the original manuscript. Anyone wishing to read the full transcripts should apply to the University of Southampton who, for a fee, will provide a photocopy. It should be noted, however, that many of the epitaphs are very incomplete; some, indeed, consisting of no more than a couple of words.

Further information about Hoxton Burials can be found in a lengthy article on page 27 of the Jewish Chronicle of 4 Dec 1908, written under the non de plume of ‘Peripateticus’, with the main emphasis on the “Princely Families” of Gompertz, Salomons, Keysers, etc.  It is salutary to note that, almost one hundred years ago, the neglect of our cemeteries was being deplored.  Hoxton Cemetery was demolished in the mid 1960’s. The ‘interred’ were reburied in West Ham cemetery where a plaque notes their final resting place. See also www.jewishgen.org/cemetery/brit/london.html
