Great Synagogue Burial Registers 1791-1823

From unfinished transcripts prepared by the late Dr. Rabbi Susser

and with some editorial emendations by Frank Gent (FJG)

Days & Dates Ascertained by Vivien Grossmann from original in Register

Dr. Susser's original work was sponsored by

Mrs Shelagh Addis of Wells, Somerset.

and

Mrs Angela Shire, London,

in memory of their parents:

Bernard (George) Levy 1902 - 1993

for 30 years landlord of the Freemasons Arms Hampstead

and

Merle Levy (nee Jacobs) 1905 - 1993

Some time after the untimely death of Dr. Bernard Susser, these transcripts, along with the remainder of The Susser Archive, were passed to Frank Gent who, with his usual enthusiasm and generosity, placed them in a dedicated section of the Exeter Synagogue website.

The Susser Archive has now been incorporated into the JCR-UK website http://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/susser/susserpublications.htm but unfortunately, the Great Synagogue Burial Record data is not currently viewable.  The original registers are not available to the public and have not been filmed by the Mormons so it is to be hoped that someone with Dr. Susser's degree of knowledge,  experience and dedication, will, one day be able to complete his work.

With well over 3000 entries, conversion into database format has not been easy and errors are inevitable but I felt that Anglo-Jewish researchers with roots in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, might find the tabulated data useful and, I therefore offer them, with all their imperfections.

Angela Shire, London  May 2006

Important Note: These transcripts are intended for the use of individual Genealogists and Family Historians. Complete or partial files should not be copied to any Genealogical Archive, placed on websites or bulletin boards, or otherwise published in any printed or electronic media.

FILE FORMAT

bullet The tables are available in Microsoft Excel or PDF format. Click the links to download this file PDF or Excel. If you have difficulty with this format email the webmaster who will endeavour to help.

THE TRANSCRIPTIONS

bullet The aim has been to retain the overall integrity of Dr. Susser's transcription, including his rendition of Hebrew names, which is essentially different from those employed by the transliterator of Great Synagogue Marriages.  However, in order to keep the tables more compact, the Hebrew date of death and the date of burial which, in the transcripts appears variously as SD (same day), ND (next day) +1, +2 etc. have been omitted.
bullet Apart from missing data, the transcripts contain a certain number of orthographical and other discrepancies. Since it has not been possible to ascertain whether these occurred in the original register, or arose during transcription, they have not been edited.
bullet Some of the interspersed headings and comments made by the Synagogue Secretary,  have not been reproduced in the *.xls files.

REF

Each record has been assigned a reference number prefaced by the letters GSBUR (e.g. GSBUR 040/318)

The first set of numbers relates to the page in the Burial Register and matches those set out in Dr. Susser's transcript.

The sequential numbers that follow do not match those in Susser as there appeared to be some inadvertent duplication.

GROUND

Denotes the cemetery or that part of the cemetery where the person was interred.

DATE

Many of the entries are undated.  An approximate period between the last dated record and the next has been indicated, but it is always possible that the Secretary entered some records in non-sequential order.

FAMILY NAME & FORENAME

Unbracketed names appear in the original record.

Square brackets [JONES] denote that the name is implicit elsewhere in the record

Square brackets followed by a question mark [JONES?] denote a highly probable link to a record found in other documented sources. See 'Additional'

Square brackets followed by a double question mark [JONES??] denote a possible, but more contentious, link.

A family name followed by (MN) denotes that this is a woman's married name.

HEBREW NAME - INCLUDING FATHER HEBREW & SPOUSE

Square brackets here, as in Jeremi'[ah], Elij'[ah], Ary'[eh] etc', were inserted by Dr. Susser, presumably to complete abbreviated names in the original.

His use of capitalization has been retained wherever this occurs.

In the case of illegitimate children and where the mother's name is given in the 'fathers' column, her name has been italicised, e.g. 'Infant of Gittela bat Simeon'.  This also applies to the children of widowed mothers, e.g. 'daughter of widow of Meir b. the late Mordecai'.

ADDRESS

These can sometimes be unusually lengthy, e.g. "5, Rosmand Place, Islington Green; Parish of St Mary, Islington, and of St Mary Axe in the City of London; Parish of St Andrew Undershaft"  Such detail may, however, be of interest and has, therefore,  been retained.

ADDITIONAL

Unprefaced notes such as "age 2 years", "b--in-(L) Lipman Pollak" etc., are direct quotes from the Register or, as for example,  "Did they bury a leg with Moses? Or was he a one-legged Man?" comments made by Dr. Susser.

Notes prefaced by "ALS:"  have been made by the editor. Links to other documented sources are offered as possible lines of research. Although many appear very well-founded, it cannot be stressed too strongly that they are only suggestions and should be treated as such.

Matches have been sought to Burials in the Alderney Road Cemetery and an abstract of burials which occurred within the period 1791-1823 is appended, with a column cross referencing the relevant GSBUR* Abstracts from Inscriptions in the Alderney Road Cemetery are available as their own file by clicking here.
